Law as a Career Legal profession is a fast growing profession. In these days of globalization and liberalization, it is likely to get further momentum as more lawyers would be required to handle cases arising out of international trade and as a result of growing importance. A law graduate can choose to work in any of the following fields:- 1.Practice The traditional career path for lawyer, is to "go into practice", or join the service of a senior advocate, as his junior.This career path, gives rise to the traditional image of a lawyer, who represents any client who choose him to represent them.This is a thrilling line,where one has to apply his mind to a plethora of different issues to win one's case.Even in this field, there are areas of specialization, of course, some lawyers practice criminal law, some company law and at a later stage, even constitutional law. 2.Joining a law firm A law firm is usually comprised of partners and associates.The firm management is comprised of the lawyers who come together to form a partnership.These partners share profits of the firm.These partners hire other lawyers to work as associates on a salary or percentage of work basis.These associates can work at the firm for a period of time and establish their competence at work, they can even become partners at the firm and share in the profits and management of the firm.Law firms caters to the interests of companies and private individuals alike though most of the large law firms deal exclusively with corporate. 3.Lawyers in Corporate field The other path is to join a company, as part of its Legal Department, and work only for that company, on its legal affairs, like any other employee of the company.In major companies the legal managers play a critical role, concerning themselves with agreements,compliance of other sort and finally,legal disputes.The salaries are high and comparable to those offered at top management institutes. 4.Lawyers as Social workers The law course curriculum contains several courses designed to address relevant social issues including gender concerns, caste-based discrimination, employment, working conditions, environmental protection and the marginalization of various peoples.If you are interested then the job satisfaction is tremendous.You can get a tremendous sense of worth because you are contributing to something that makes people's lives better. 5.Being a judge Generally the State Public Service Commissions conduct the competitive examination for the Post of Sub-judge and Magistrates in the junior division of State Juddiciary.Fresh Law Graduates without any experience are eligible to take up the exam which is exclusively for holders of an LL.B degree. 6.Career in Legal Academics Joining one of the law schools or law faculty as a lecturer offers you a life of peace, harmony, honour and good salary as well in the Class 1 scale of the government. 7.Creative Opportunities in law Some other career options available to law graduates of a top law school include:-
  1. Legal Journalism -- Working as a legal correspondent for a newspaper,magazine, press or media group or a law magazine or journal.Lawyers with journalistic interest join this field.
  2. Book-writing --.Law has unlimited opportunity in publications of books and journals.Law graduates with academic and literary inclination opt for writing law books and contributing for law journals.
  3. Joining an MSW/MBA course -- A law graduate has opportunity to join on MSW or MBA course for a better careers in NGOs and companies.
  4. LL.B with C.S. or C.A. -- A law graduate with an additional qualification of Chartered Accountancy or Company Secretaryship becomes much more valuable and sought after for senior positions in companies and business.
  5. Preparing for Civil Services Exams with 'Law' Option-Law graduates generally write IAS and PCS exams with law paper as an optional in the prelim and main exams.
